Wealthy elite characters in Australian TV commercials
A look at wealthy elite characters in Australian TV commercials. These days we tend to make fun of an elite rich person for being out of touch but a few decades ago rich characters were often presented without irony, as if we're supposed to respect them.
This segment originally appeared in VHS Revue 52 - From The Kimberley to The Coast (1978). Watch the full episode here: ua-cam.com/video/XEvPUh5Y7z4/v-deo.html
Commercials for BP and Cussons Imperial Leather Soap recorded from Brisbane's Channel Seven, 1 November 1978 and used here for review, parody and satirical purposes.
Additional footage: Spray n' Wipe TVC (1993), SA Power Ball (KWPX, 2005), CFMEU (2010), Compare The Market (2012), Glen 20 (1984), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (BBC, 1981).

My dad picks his nose- it goes to Snottee’s! Agree about the bottle size. I don’t buy Cottee’s anymore. They used to instruct you to mix it as one part cordial/nine parts water. Then a couple of years ago I noticed they’d changed it to 7/1 but were charging the same, so now I avoid it on principle. They couldn’t realistically make the bottle smaller, so they just decided to put less product into it and top it off with water. Never would have happened back when my dad picked the fruit that went to Cottee’s.

A lot of the store owners were insane back then too. It became quite apparent in their ads when they'd shout their prices!

I was only talking about this last week and especially the Imperial leather advert, advertisers used to use the impression of wealth and prestige as an incentive to buy their products but now our society detests that vision in advertising. Maybe wealth was once seen as potentially an achievable goal but is now perceived as unachievable. Fantasy/naivety vs stark reality perhaps or maybe is just the different perceptions from childhood to adult.

  • @maddyg3208

In the Imperial Leather one, they weren't meant to be people everyone would relate/aspire to, it was a satire of "luxury". Does comedy have to be explained nowadays?
